Argentina, South America

Argentina facts and history in brief
Buenos Aires, (1/3 of Argentina's population live in
metropolitan area), Argentina's
(Also the Southern Hemisphere's) largest
city and capital also leading centre
of government, commerce, manufacturing
and culture.
It lies on the west bank of the
Rio de la Plata, 240 km
from the Atlantic Ocean.
Buenos Aires has many fine buildings, wide
streets and beautiful parks.
We arrived in the middle of the night
and had to wait till about 6 am to
catch the #86 public bus from outside
of the Airport to the city centre.
We did not like the Hotel we were
heading for, but soon found a suitable
one, the El Cabildo Hotel (Lavalle
748, ph/f (54-11) 4322-6745), which
turned out to be an older hotel,
very central, reasonably priced and
the staff very obliging and helpful.
Soon after our arrival Hui Chin
arranged a a city sightseeing tour and
we got to know the town pretty
good this way in a very short time.
Amongst the many interesting sights
of Buenos Aires, we seen the Cathedral,
the Avenida 9 de Julio, (One of the
widest street in the world), the
Plaza de Mayo, (true centre of B.A.),
and the nearby Pink Palace, (Where
"Evita" and Peron spoke to the
people, the Plaza de la Republica, with
it's Obelisk and the colourful La
Boca and Camini districts.
Hui Chin and I enjoyed our
stay very much in Buenos Aires.
We liked the city's very European
look and feel. We enjoyed the night
markets on the streets all around
us. Spent long time watching the
skilful artist at work on the streets,
the many and very cheap internet
excess. (Although internet access
at Buenos Aires was the best priced
and many of them around, in general
access in Latin America was much
cheaper and easier find than in
the U.S.A., where we found it very
expensive and much harder to find.)
We are looking forward to
visit the city again.
